Blooming Beginnings: Junior Green Thumbs’ First Class in July

Summer has arrived, and with it came the vibrant green spirit of the Junior Green Thumbs program. Our first class in July was an absolute delight, filled with laughter, learning, and the promise of budding gardeners to come!

Planting the Seeds of Knowledge: 🌱

Under the warm July sun, our young garden enthusiasts gathered at the Lawrence County Community Garden. We kicked off the day with an educational journey led by the knowledgeable Matt Dunkin. From the fascinating history of Dunkin’s Market to planting techniques and the art of nurturing a flourishing garden, our kids were eager learners. They discovered the secrets of companion planting, where certain plants support each other’s growth, just like how our garden community supports each other.

Shopping Spree at Dunkin’s Market: πŸ›’

What’s a garden without seeds and seedlings? Thanks to the generosity of the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation and their Garden Grant Program, our young green thumbs embarked on a shopping spree at Dunkin’s Market. From herbs to flowers, peppers to strawberries, and tomatoes to fragrant herbs, the choices were as diverse as the young gardeners themselves. Each plant selected was not just a seedling; it was a promise of future blooms and harvests.

Painting Life into the Garden: 🎨

But our adventure didn’t stop at planting. The garden came alive in a different way when we picked up our paintbrushes to create beautiful stepping stones. Each stroke of color was a reflection of the creativity and imagination that our young gardeners brought to the garden. These stones will not only brighten our path but also remind us of the unique personalities that make up our budding gardening community.

A Community Grows Together: 🌻

As the day came to an end, we couldn’t help but be filled with gratitude. The support from the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation allowed us to bring youth together, nurturing their understanding of gardening and the importance of producing our own foods. But it’s the smiles on the faces of our young gardeners, their hands in the soil, and the joy of discovery that truly made this day special.

Here at Junior Green Thumbs, we’re not just growing gardens; we’re cultivating future stewards of the earth. We’re excited for the green adventures that lie ahead as we nurture these young minds and watch their love for gardening bloom. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our journey through the world of horticulture, one planting at a time! πŸŒΏπŸŒΌπŸ…
